You have added six new pairs of people who now have to agree with each other.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignleft\"><blockquote><p>Communication cost grows with the square of the team. They are done by a team of people \u2014 a small one.<\/p><cite>Adapted, and the second half matters<\/cite><\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What actually makes them fast<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Shared context.<\/strong> Nobody has to be briefed, because everybody was there.<\/li><li><strong>Reversible decisions.<\/strong> Small teams pick the door they can walk back through, and walk through it sooner.<\/li><li><strong>Nobody to hand off to.<\/strong> The person who found the problem fixes the problem.<\/li><li><strong>Short feedback.<\/strong> A mistake surfaces in hours, not at the review.<\/li><\/ol>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\r\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pulsar.ispazio.net\/auto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/09\/pulsar-demo-26.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"320\" height=\"213\" src=\"https:\/\/pulsar.ispazio.net\/auto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/09\/pulsar-demo-26.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2261067\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The whiteboard is the documentation until it is not.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The limits are real and worth naming. Small teams carry a bus factor of roughly one, they are terrible at anything that needs sustained coverage, and the shared context that makes them fast is exactly what makes onboarding a new person slow.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-very-light-gray-background-color has-background\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The trade you are actually making<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speed now, in exchange for resilience later. That is a fine trade for a first version and a bad one for a system that has to run for ten years. The mistake is not choosing one \u2014 it is choosing one and pretending you did not.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If you have to grow<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Split before you scale. Two teams of four, each owning something end to end, keep most of the speed. One team of eight keeps almost none of it.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>Does this apply outside software?<\/summary>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The communication maths does. The rest depends on how divisible the work is: a kitchen and a newsroom both hit the same wall, and both solve it the same way \u2014 smaller units, each owning a whole thing.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/details>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-wide\" \/>\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It is not talent and it is not tooling.
